November 2.30pm Kick off at Ballymena Showgrounds
Wakehurst 0 v
Ballymoney United 2
Ballymoney United defeated Wakehurst on Saturday in the second round of the Intermediate Cup with a hard fought 2-0 win at Ballymena showgrounds.
Wakehurst were stunned with an early goal on seven minutes when David Nicholl pounced on a defensive error and with only the keeper to beat coolly slotted the ball past Joe McErlean in the Wakehurst goal to make it 1-0.
Ballymoney came close again on 12 minutes but Joe McErlean made a good save ably assisted by team captain Dougie Stevenson. Rodney Paul tried a long range effort for Wakehurst on 23 minutes but Simon Smyth held comfortably for Ballymoney.
Wakehurst started to come into the game more and Conor Gregg was causing the Ballymoney defence some problems. A foul on 37 minutes gave Wakehurst a chance to reduce the deficit and Steven McIlroy’s free produced a good save from Smyth.
Wakehurst were awarded a corner on 40 minutes after good work by Stephen Mellon and Steven McIlroy was unlucky to see his shot just go over the bar.
As the half came to an end, it was all Wakehurst applying the pressure and a great turn and pass by Conor Gregg to Stephen Mellon deserved a goal but again Ballymoney managed to clear.
Wakehurst came out in the second half with it all to do and with the half only five minutes old Wakehurst had an opportunity with a corner but it didn’t trouble Smyth in the Ballymoney goal.
Conor Gregg was in the action on 52 minutes and only a great save by the keeper denied Gregg and Wakehurst. Stephen Mellon had a chance on 62 minutes but he shot straight at the keeper. Conor Gregg was brought down on 65 minutes as he was heading for goal but Stephen Mellon’s free kick from 20 yards was again caught comfortably by Smyth.
On 70 minutes Ballymoney could have made it two when David Nicholl should have scored but his shot hit the side netting. Wakehurst made three substitutions with David Paul, Russel Craig and Ali McIlroy coming on to push for an equaliser.
Unfortunately for Wakehurst it was game over on 77 minutes when Gareth McLaughlin scored with a great strike to put Ballymoney into the next round.
