FIXTURES & RESULTS

Saturday 28 March 2.30pm Kick off at Riada Stadium

Ballymoney United 0 v Ballinamallard United 1

A great game of football played in the right spirit with neither team really deserving to win in a game that had 0-0 written all over it.
Ballymoney absorbed some early Ballinamallard pressure and relied on the counter attack with David Gage making some great runs from defence down the left. However it was the visitors who nearly opened the scoring on 15 mins when Campbell rounded Smyth in the home goal but was well covered by defender Hill to clear the danger.
On 25mins a great pass from O’Kane sent Gage on another run down the left like a gazelle but Nicholl couldn’t control his cross for what was a half chance. On the half hour McLernon put in Kearney for another good chance but again it was squandered.
Ballymoney thought they had got the breakthrough when the visitor’s keeper Morrison clobbered Kearney inside the box for a certain penalty but referee McIlrath judged that the foul was on the line when it was obvious to all present that it was Kearneys momentum that took him to the edge of the box. The referee awarded a free kick on the 18 yard line, terrible decision.
With half time approaching Ballymoney again nearly scored when Denver Gage connected with a Kearney corner well saved Morrison.
Half Time 0-0
Both teams continued to play attractive football and Flaherty brought a great save out of Smyth in the home goal. At this stage it was all attack and counter attack and on the hour O’Kane came close bringing a great save out of Morrison. Ballymoney controlled most of the play during this period of the game but couldn’t break down a very resolute Ballinamallard defence.
Another great ball in by David gage found Nicholl who let fly with a great effort from the edge of the box bringing another great save from Morrison. From the corner Denver Gage again came close just over from close range. The visitors brought a great save out of Smyth when a Kee shot went close.
With the game settling into 0-0 draw pattern Crawford capitalised on some slack defensive play and whacked the ball past Smyth in the home goal.
With about 10 mins left Ballymoney piled on the pressure but couldn’t penetrate the visitors defence.
