Saturday 10
January 3.00pm Kick off at Suffolk Road
Donegal Celtic
4 v
Ballymoney United 2
Ballymoney started this game well at Suffolk Road and came close on 10 minutes when Kearney beat the home defence and squared to McKinney whose shot was well saved by Brown.
Unfortunately the match took a cruel turn for the visitors when goalkeeper Smyth fouled McVeigh who was in on goal on 20 mins resulting in him being sent off, reminiscent of his Coleraine debut some years ago, for dangerous play.
Down to 10 men Ballymoney continued to thwart any DC attacks and created some good chances themselves the best effort coming from a McLernon free kick on 40 mins.
It looked like the visitors were going to hold on until half time when McVeigh looking suspiciously offside ran on to a Munster pass and scored past stand in keeper Tully on 44 mins.
Half time Donegal Celtic 1 Ballymoney United 0
Ballymoney continued to hold Celtic at bay and it was another cruel blow for the visitors when Surgenor while trying to clear a dangerous cross headed into his own net to make it 2 - 0.
Donegal Celtic added a third on the half hour when Tully fumbled a back post cross dropping the ball at the feet of Garner who made no mistake from close range to make it 3 – 0.
McVeigh added a second goal to his tally when he netted a superb free kick beating the Ballymoney wall and the unsighted Tully in goal.
The home team were rampant at this stage of the game and only a brilliant save by Tully on 75 mins prevented Munster from adding to the home score.
With time running out Ballymoney attacked down the right through McQuitty who slipped a pass into Kearney who in turn squared to Gilmore to hit a rasping drive into the corner of the net giving Brown in the home nets no chance.
Ballymoney regained possession straight from the centre and a McLernon pass found Kearney in the home penalty box only to see him unceremoniously chopped down to be awarded a penalty which was converted by Surgenor to add a bit of respectability to the scoreline.
