Saturday 21
March 2.30pm Kick off at Darragh Park
Dergview 1 v Ballymoney United 0
This was a dour affair at Darragh Park with a much changed
Ballymoney team due to players representing Northern Ireland in UEFA
Regions Cup in Germany.
Although the game could have been postponed because of this Joe
McCall decided to go ahead with the fixture. Both teams got off to a
lively start but it was the visitors who had most of the early
possession.
Both defences were on top of their game and the first chance fell to
Ferry on 10 mins but Smyth in the visitors goal was alert to the
danger and brought of a great save. A great ball in by Ried on
20mins was scrambled clear by Carlin with the Ballymoney attack
homing in.
Reid showed great strength five minutes later when he forced himself
through and shot just over the bar. A brilliant ball in by McLernon
on 35 mins found David Gage unmarked in the six yard box unaware he
had plenty of time he headed tamely into arms of a relieved Barclay
in the home goal.
On the next Dergview attack Campbell found Coulter who stumbled
through two weak defensive tackles and side footed the ball past the
advancing Smyth in the Ballymoney goal.
Ballymoney continued to play most of the football but the final pass
left a lot to be desired. Just before halftime Nicholl found
McLaughlin with a fantastic pass for the forward to take on the
defence which he did but decided to pass when shooting looked the
better option.
Half Time Dergview 1 Ballymoney United 0
The start of the second half saw both defences back in control with
not a lot of chances for either team. On the hour Barclay pulled of
a great save from a McLernon special which was heading for the top
corner.
Ballymoney continued to press for the equaliser and pegged the home
team back in their own half but the defence remained resilient.
Ballymoney brought on Colts players McKenna and Hugh Og Boyle to
make his debut at senior level. Both players adapted to the pace of
the game settling quickly. The visitors pressure was relentless but
the home defence absorbed attack after attack with Barclay in the
home goal definitely Dergview's player of the match.
In the last 10 minutes Ballymoney had no fewer than 8 corners and it
was a case of all hands to the pump when the visitors goalkeeper
Smyth joined in the attack such was the pressure.
However it was not to be when the last chance of the game fell to
Ried at the back post but he headed wide.
Final Score Dergview 1 Ballymoney United 0
