FIXTURES & RESULTS

Saturday 14 February 2.30pm Kick off at Riada Stadium

Ballymoney United 1 v Banbridge Town 1

Ballymoney started this game brightly with David Gage finding a lot of space down the left, it was from one of his crosses that the home side almost took the lead, and only a brave save by Wilton at the feet of McKinney denied the home side from opening the scoring.
With United on fire and attacking at will again it was McKinney who cut inside and unleashed a ferocious drive from 18 yards bringing the best out of Wilton in the visitor’s goal. Banbridge clawed their way back into the game as the half progressed and Ballymoney had Smyth to thank for remaining level when he tipped a Malone free kick on to the cross bar. Both teams attacked and counter attacked but defences at each end kept control till half time.

Ballymoney started the second half in attacking fashion and Nicholl squandered a glorious chance blazing his shot over the bar from a McKinney pass early in the half. The deadlock was broken in spectacular fashion when a corner was headed well clear by Tully to Evan's whose thunderous strike was a classic no doubt. He struck a first time effort, on the half volley, high into the top corner from twenty yards for what looked like the winning goal on the hour. Both teams had cancelled each other out in this game of few chances.
Dale Malone did test Smyth in the home goal from a twenty five yard free kick and again in open play from all of thirty yards but Smyth rose to the challenge denying Malone on both occasions. To be honest David Wilton kept Banbridge in the game at the other end on two occasions when a Gilmore effort was well saved and again thwarted McLaughlin from close range. Ballymoney maintained their pressure and were rewarded with 2 mins remaining when a goal ward header by David Gage was diverted by Surgenor over the hapless Wilton in the visitor’s goal.
Part of Surgenors celebration involved running towards to the stand and wishing girlfriend Pamela a happy Valentines day. A well earned draw for Ballymoney which was probably a fair result.
