FIXTURES & RESULTS

Saturday 15 August 3.00pm Kick off at The Showgrounds Limavady

Limavady United 2 v Ballymoney United 2

This was a very open game with both teams playing good attacking football with neither team creating a clear cut chance until the 20 minute mark when Nicholl found Ried with a great ball but Ried's header was well saved by Doherty in the home goal.
Limavady countered and were awarded a free kick out on their left after a foul by McQuitty, Young stepped up and lashed a low and hard kick across the face of the visitor’s goal with no one there to tap in a good chance. Patrick tried a speculative long range effort on 30 mins but the on form Smyth had no trouble waving the effort over the bar.
The game settled into a game of attack and counterattack and it was on one of those attacks that Ballymoney found Nicholl on the edge of the box Nicholl tried to create space for a shot but was closed down by a very resolute home defence, Nicholl finally found enough space to pass to Ried who was chopped down by McLaughlin, referee Tucker had no doubt and awarded the Toon a penalty on 35 mins.
McLaughlin stepped up and blasted past Doherty 1-0 Ballymoney.
Limavady piled on the pressure but found the visiting defence on good form and in particular Denver Gage. Just before half time McKeever tried a looping long range effort but Smyth covered the shot to leave the half time score 1-0 to the visitors. A slight wind came up in the second half and on 55 mins Cutmore used it to his advantage when he curled a long range free kick from the right round the wall and over Smyth at his back post to score an excellent equaliser.
The home team cheered on by a partisan crowd piled on the pressure in search of a second goal but the visitors defence held their line and started a great move from defence on 70 mins inter passing finally giving the ball to McQuitty who initially started the move, McQuitty wasted no time spotting Ried on a run and slipped the ball into the path of Ried splitting the home defence the big striker took one touch and rifled the ball past a hapless Doherty in the home goal to give the Toon the lead. This was the boost Ballymoney needed and on 80 mins McLaughlin let fly with a superb strike only to see Doherty bring off an equally superb save.
With time running out a great Ballymoney move put in Kearney one on one on the keeper but maybe the thought of putting one over on his brother the Limavady manager caught him in two minds, Kearney shot wide of the keeper and just wide of the post, this would have put the game beyond the home team but it was not to be.
With 3 mins added time on the clock Nicholl let a ball that had just came off a Limavady player go wide for a goalkick but the unsighted Tucker asked his linesman for advise he awarded a corner much to the disgust of the Ballymoney defence. Limavady piled everyone forward and from the ensuing corner followed a goalmouth scramble which Ballymoney couldn’t clear because of the weight of numbers eventually Jennings poked the ball home for a Limavady equaliser and a share of the points on the final whistle.
