Ballymoney United’s run in the Irish cup came to an abrupt end at the Riada Stadium today in a 6-1 defeat against Newry City.

United went into the game hopeful of pulling off a shock but a poor start seen then go 2 down within 25 minutes with goals from Hughes & Grant. Ian Christie had a great opportunity to reduce the arrears but his goal bound effort on 30mins was palmed away by the Newry keeper.

United did get a goal back when a low Liam Kearney cross was turned into his own net by Donnegan on 34 minutes.

The tie was effectivly over just five minutes into the second half when Haveron pounced twice to make it 4-1. Newry completed the scoring with Hughes scoring again on 74 minutes and Haveron completing his hat trick on 76 mins with a penalty.

Paul Gaston and his players were celebrating a famous victory as Ballymoney United upset the odds at Clandeboye Park to secure a place in the last sixteen of the Irish Cup for the first time in 27 years.
Bangor went a goal down after just six minutes when home left back Marc Whitford, attempting to clear a Paul Keane cross from the left for a corner, sent an unstoppable diving header past keeper Paul Cairnduff from six yards into the bottom left hand corner of the net.
Things got worse for the Championship 1 side ten minutes later after a low 25 yard free kick by midfielder Francis McKenna pierced the Bangor wall and seemed to come off a bump on the pitch six yards out to fly over the arm of the diving keeper to give the underdogs a two goal advantage.
Bangor pushed forward against a determined defence and on 21 minutes a four yard header by defender Dean Youle from ex-Ballymoney player Gareth Mclaughlin’s corner on the right was just too high.
For the visitors lively forward Mark Gillan was a constant threat as Ballymoney looked to catch Bangor on the break. The Seasiders were thrown a lifeline on 37 minutes when from seven yards Gareth Mclaughlin slammed a cross from new signing Conor Glenholmes past Ballymoney keeper Bryan Moore.
Bangor threw everyone forward after the break, but it was Ballymoney who grabbed the vital goal on 65 minutes. Gerald Gillan sent in a cross from the left for sub Liam Kearney who had come on two minutes earlier to send a right foot volley from fourteen yards into the net.
Ballymoney keeper Bryan Moore made a super save on 74 minutes when he fisted a goal-bound long range Gareth Mclaughlin shot out from under his crossbar, but he was left helpless four minutes later when McLaughlin hit a loose ball from 25 yards to give Bangor renewed hope.
Moore made a double save on 80 minutes to block a rasping twelve yard drive by home sub. Chris Middleton and recover to save again from Mclaughlin. The keeper was again in action on 87 minutes to fingertip a looping Mclaughlin shot past the upright.
With Bangor hunting the equaliser, Ballymoney broke to hit their fourth goal a minute into added time, Liam Kearney cut the ball in from the left for an unmarked and secure a deserved victory for the Championship 2 side as Ian Christie coolly sidefooted home from ten yards.
